This is an opinion piece. It reflects our team's judgement, not official data. The assumptions behind each recommendation are listed in the article.

There's no single best class in Classic World. It depends on what you want to do. On a community level 70 benchmark, Fighter is the strongest all-round grinder (top pack damage and the best damage per MP), Bandit has the highest single-target damage, Cleric is the clear party-support pick, and Hunter and Page sit near the top for mobbing. The tiers below are our reading of that data, goal by goal.

Quick picks: Mobbing: Fighter, Hunter, Page, Fire/Poison Wizard. Bossing: Bandit, then Assassin and Fighter. Solo comfort: Fighter, Page. Party support: Cleric. Cheapest to run (meso farming proxy): Fighter, Page.

Assumptions (read these first)

This is an opinion page. Every tier rests on these assumptions:

  1. Level 70, 2nd job only. All numbers are from a community benchmark's "Realistic" level 70 builds. Third job isn't in the game at launch. At level 30 to 50, with fewer skill points, the order can be different.
  2. Ideal target. Damage is measured against a target with 0 defense that never moves, and every hit lands. Accuracy, knockback and walking between monsters aren't counted.
  3. Neutral elements by default. Mages and Clerics do better against monsters weak to their element; we note where that matters.
  4. Resources never run out in the damage numbers. Damage per MP is shown separately; potion, arrow and throwing-star costs are not counted.
  5. Survival is the benchmark's effective HP (EHP) against a level 70 Tauromacis, with defensive buffs on.
  6. No EXP-per-hour or mesos-per-hour data exists for any class yet, so the "meso farming" tier is a proxy, and the least certain one here.
  7. Ten jobs: Fighter, Page, Spearman, Fire/Poison (F/P) Wizard, Ice/Lightning (I/L) Wizard, Cleric, Hunter, Crossbowman, Assassin, Bandit.

The benchmark itself doesn't give an overall rank or tiers; the tiers are ours.

The numbers behind the tiers (community benchmark, level 70)

JobSingle-target DPSAoE DPSDamage per MPPhysical EHPMagic EHPSupport (1 to 5)

Spearman3,6519,875203.26~4,930~3,2901.5
F/P Wizard2,66610,25377.20~3,280~3,1703.5
I/L Wizard2,5186,22192.79~3,160~3,1703.5
Cleric2,193None63.51~4,820~3,7205.0

AoE is measured at each skill's target cap (6 targets for Slash Blast, Poison Breath, Thunder Bolt, Arrow Bomb and Iron Arrow in the skill data; 2 for Steal). Assassin has no multi-target attack in 1st and 2nd job, and Cleric's Heal only damages undead, so neither has a neutral AoE number.

Mobbing (clearing packs)

TierJobsWhy
SFighter, Hunter, Page, F/P WizardOver 10,000 AoE DPS at a 6-target cap. Fighter leads at 13,287 thanks to Slash Blast plus Axe Mastery bleed on every target
ASpearman, CrossbowmanClose behind (9,875 and 9,766)
BI/L Wizard, BanditI/L's Thunder Bolt is 6,221 on neutral targets; Bandit's Steal only hits 2 targets
Not ratedAssassin, ClericNo neutral AoE in the benchmark. Clerics are strong on undead maps with Heal

I/L moves up on lightning-weak monsters: the benchmark's favorable-matchup Thunder Bolt does about 25% more per cast (6,304 vs 5,044).

Bossing (single target)

TierJobsWhy
SBandit5,469 DPS, keeping Steal's attack buff up with Savage Blow
AAssassin, Fighter, Hunter, Page, Crossbowman, Spearman3,651 to 4,266 DPS. Assassin's Lucky Seven fires 100 times a minute from range
BF/P Wizard, I/L Wizard, Cleric2,193 to 2,666 DPS on neutral targets, and the most MP-hungry

Two caveats. Bandit's number assumes fresh targets to Steal from; the benchmark notes a monster can only be stolen from successfully once. And bosses have defense, while this benchmark doesn't, so treat it as a ranking, not a kill time. The launch bosses are covered in bosses in Classic World.

Solo grinding (damage, survival and sustain together)

TierJobsWhy
SFighter, PageTop-4 AoE, S-grade physical and magic EHP, and the two best damage-per-MP figures
ASpearman, Hunter, F/P WizardSpearman has the highest physical EHP (~4,930) and strong AoE. Hunter has big AoE and 5.0 range but low EHP (~2,680). F/P has big AoE and top mobility (5.0), but burns MP
BCrossbowman, Bandit, Assassin, I/L Wizard, ClericEach gives up one of the three: Crossbowman survival, Bandit and Assassin pack damage, I/L damage, Cleric damage

Fighter and Page can trade some damage for a lot of safety with a one-hander and shield: the benchmark puts Fighter at about 8% less single-target DPS for ~7,890 physical EHP, and Page at about 18% less for ~8,130.

Party play

TierJobsWhy
SClericSupport 5.0, the top rating, and the best magic EHP (~3,720)
AFighter, Page, F/P Wizard, I/L Wizard, Bandit, AssassinSupport 3.0 to 3.5, plus strong AoE (Fighter, Page, F/P) or single-target damage (Bandit, Assassin)
BHunter, Spearman, CrossbowmanSupport 1.5 to 2.5. Still great damage; less to offer the group beyond it

For party EXP and KPQ, see the KPQ walkthrough.

Meso farming (proxy: cheapest kills)

No source measures mesos per hour by class yet, so we use damage per MP as a stand-in for potion cost per kill, with AoE and survival as tie-breakers. This tier is the least certain on the page.

TierJobsWhy
SFighter, Page253.12 and 230.83 damage per MP, the two best, with S-tier AoE
ASpearman, Hunter, Crossbowman164 to 203 damage per MP. Bowmen also pay for arrows, which the benchmark doesn't count
BAssassin, Bandit, F/P Wizard, I/L Wizard, ClericAssassin pays for throwing stars; the three magicians get roughly a quarter to a third of Fighter's damage per MP

For actual meso methods, see how to make mesos.

How this compares with other lists

Other community lists disagree, because they measure different things. One community tier list, based on how classes felt in the closed tests, puts I/L Wizard and Assassin at the top and the three Warriors at the bottom, nearly the reverse of the damage numbers for Warriors. If you care more about feel (mobility, Teleport, range) than raw output, that's a valid lens. We'll update this page when there's live EXP and meso data.

Picking your class

  • New and want it easy? Fighter or Page: strong, tanky, cheap to run.
  • Want to boss? Bandit, or Assassin for range.
  • Want to be wanted in parties? Cleric.
  • Want to clear maps fast from range? Hunter.
