The Cleric is the Magician's support path at level 30: Heal keeps your party alive and damages undead, Bless cuts the damage your party takes, Invincible cuts the touch damage you take, and Holy Arrow is your attack. You won't top any damage chart, but you'll be the hardest Magician to kill and the one every party wants.

Quick answer: Advance at Lv 30 with Grendel the Really Old in Ellinia. Party build: Holy Arrow first, then Invincible 5 โ†’ Bless, then max Heal. Solo build: Holy Arrow, then Invincible, Heal last. Hunt undead (Zombie Mushrooms, Jr. Wraiths, Zombie Lupins, Wraiths) where Heal and Holy Arrow both shine. Note: in the launch build Holy Arrow hits one target, not three.

What changed for Clerics in Classic World

If you're coming back from the original game or read pre-launch guides, three things matter:

  • Holy Arrow is single-target now. The Classic World skill data gives Holy Arrow a mob count of 1 and Basic Attack 160 at max. A community launch skill-change log explains the change: targets went from 3 to 1 between the second Closed Online Test and launch, with magic attack raised from 60 to 160 to compensate. Pre-launch skill pages and some Cleric guides still show "3 enemies"; ignore them.
  • Invincible was trimmed. The skill data caps it at -20% physical damage (the same log lists the value dropping from 30 to 20). Pre-launch skill pages still show -30% at max.
  • Bless is a damage-reduction buff. In the skill data, Classic Bless lowers all damage nearby party members take and raises Heal's recovery: 15% less damage and 10% more Heal recovery at max. (A pre-launch Bless skill page still lists an Accuracy/Avoidability buff.)

Becoming a Cleric

At Lv 30, Grendel the Really Old in Ellinia starts the 2nd job advancement. He sends you with a letter to the Magician Job Instructor in The Forest North of Ellinia; you clear the test, collect 30 Dark Marbles (per the quest data), trade them for The Proof of a Hero, and bring it back to Grendel to choose Cleric (2nd job quest guide). Coming from 1st job, see our Magician 1โ€“30 guide.

How Heal actually works

Heal restores HP to you and nearby party members and damages undead monsters around you. The amount healed depends on how many people it's spread across. A few more details worth knowing:

  • Heal has six shared target slots. You and nearby party members take priority, so solo you have up to five left for undead. More targets means less damage per undead.
  • Its area grows at skill level 16: the skill data's Range goes from 100% to 120% (community measurements put that at 500ร—180 px to 600ร—180 px).
  • Heal only damages undead. Holy-weak mobs that aren't undead (Malady and Dark Stone Golem, for example) take Holy Arrow bonus damage but nothing from Heal.
  • Community tip: step away from Zombie Mushrooms before you heal yourself, or you'll pull them in and get less recovery.

Heal is also your best potion. Community testing measured Heal 2 at about 110 HP for 12 MP (roughly 12 mesos), versus about 55 mesos for the same HP in potions.

Holy Arrow and the undead

Holy-weak monsters take 25% more damage from Holy Arrow; community damage rules use 1.25ร— for a weakness. On Victoria Island, Zombie Mushroom (Lv 24), Jr. Wraith (Lv 34), Zombie Lupin (Lv 41) and Wraith (Lv 48) are undead and weak to Holy in the monster data, which is why Clerics live in the Ant Tunnel and the Kerning Subway. Full map picks are in Cleric training spots.

The monster data also marks the skeleton family (Skeledog 44, Mummydog 47, Skeleton Soldier 57, Officer Skeleton 63, Commander Skeleton 73) and the bosses Shade (48) and Zombie Mushmom (55) as undead and Holy-weak. The skeletons have no MP, so MP Eater gets nothing from them. Fairies (Lv 29) are the reverse: Holy-resistant.

SP builds: party or solo

Both builds are community builds based on popular community Cleric builds. Both end with Heal 30, Holy Arrow 30, MP Eater 20 and Teleport 20; the difference is Bless vs Invincible.

Party build (Bless 16 at level 49):

LevelsSpendRunning total
30Heal +1Heal 1
31Teleport +1, MP Eater +1, Holy Arrow +1TP 1 / MPE 1 / HA 1
32โ€“40Holy Arrow +27HA 28
41Holy Arrow +2, Heal +1HA 30 / Heal 2
42Heal +3Heal 5
43โ€“44Invincible +5, Bless +1Inv 5 / Bless 1
45โ€“49Bless +15Bless 16
50โ€“58Heal +25, MP Eater +2Heal 30 / MPE 3
59โ€“64MP Eater +17, Teleport +1MPE 20 / TP 2
65โ€“70Teleport +18TP 20

Solo build: same start, but Holy Arrow is maxed by 41 (keep using Energy Bolt on mushrooms until then to save mesos), then Heal 5 at 42, Invincible maxed by 49, MP Eater by 55, Teleport by 62, and Heal last, ending at Heal 30 / Bless 1 at level 70.

At level 70 the trade looks like this (values from the skill data):

BuildBlessInvincible
Party16: all damage taken -13%5: physical damage -5%
Solo1: all damage taken -5%20: physical damage -20%

A community training calculator gives the same maps and EXP either way at levels 45, 50 and 55, so pick by how you play: Bless if you party, Invincible if you grind alone.

AP and gear

The usual community rule: keep base LUK at your level minus 10 and put the rest into INT (INT +4 / LUK +1 every level from 31 to 70). That meets each weapon's LUK on time.

LevelItemStatsRequires
10Pan Lid44 W.DEF, about 8.09% blockโ€”
30Mithril Wand55 M.ATK60 INT / 20 LUK
35Esther Shield28 W.DEF, 55 M.DEF60 INT / 25 LUK
40Fairy Wand69 M.ATK80 INT / 30 LUK
50Cromi83 M.ATK100 INT / 40 LUK
50Green Goldwind Shoes+5 LUK90 INT / 40 LUK
55Thorns87 M.ATK110 INT / 50 LUK
60Evil Tale97 M.ATK120 INT / 55 LUK

Community guides say to skip Arc Staff on this AP plan (it needs 40 LUK at 45) and stay on Fairy Wand until Cromi. Scroll gloves for Magic Attack, not Critical Rate. Spell cast speed ignores weapon speed, so just take the highest M.ATK you can equip. They also recommend staying a Kerning City citizen for its robe scrolls.

Party role

You're the reason a party survives. Community level 70 benchmarks rate the Cleric #2 in physical effective HP and #1 in magical effective HP, so you can stand in places other Magicians can't. In a party, keep Bless up, heal in bursts, and let your damage come from undead maps where Heal doubles as an attack.

The flip side: in a community level 70 single-target benchmark the Cleric is last of all ten 2nd jobs, at about 131,599 damage per minute against 159,952 for F/P and 151,062 for I/L. One community common-mistakes list opens with "Picking the class and expecting to do lots of damage." Compare paths in which Magician path to pick.

Potions and mesos

Use Heal instead of HP pots whenever you can. For MP, community shop numbers put the Orange fruit (50 MP for 50 mesos; not the Orange Potion, which restores HP) and Lemon (150 MP for 150 mesos) ahead of Blue Potions (200 MP for 220 mesos). Early Teleport costs 55 MP a jump, so keep it for gaps and emergencies until you've put points in it.

What comes after: Priest

Priest advancement is with Robeira in El Nath, but El Nath and 3rd job are not in Classic World yet (community sources agree there's no 3rd job). Community reports say Nexon is planning a 3rd job test server in early 2027; we haven't seen a Nexon announcement with a date.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cleric Heal damage undead in MapleStory Classic?
Yes. Heal restores HP to you and nearby party members and damages undead monsters nearby. It does nothing to holy-weak mobs that aren't undead.
Does Holy Arrow hit 3 monsters in Classic World?
No. The Classic World skill data gives Holy Arrow one target and Basic Attack 160 at max; a community skill-change log shows it went from 3 targets to 1 before launch. Older and pre-launch pages still show 3.
Should a Cleric max Bless or Invincible first?
Bless if you play in parties, since it cuts damage for everyone nearby. Invincible if you mostly solo, since it only protects you but goes up to -20% touch damage.
Is Cleric bad at solo leveling?
It's the slowest Magician on neutral mobs, but on undead maps Heal and Holy Arrow both get bonuses, and Heal saves a lot of potion money. Solo Clerics should live on undead maps.
What stats does a Cleric need?
INT for damage, MP and Accuracy, and only enough LUK for your weapon. The usual community plan keeps base LUK at your level minus 10.
When can a Cleric become a Priest?
Not yet. 3rd job and El Nath aren't in Classic World at launch.
