The Spearman is the Warrior's spear-or-polearm 2nd job: the longest melee reach in the game, a heavy single-target Final Attack that heals you, a self-only defense buff called Iron Will, Rush, and weapon Mastery and Booster. Power Strike and Slash Blast are still your main attacks. There's no Hyper Body at 2nd job in Classic World and no shield for this branch.

Quick answer: Rush 1 at 30 โ†’ Mastery 3 (Final Attack) โ†’ Mastery 5 (Booster) โ†’ max Mastery by 38 โ†’ max Final Attack by 47 โ†’ Booster 20 by 54 โ†’ Rush 20 by 60 โ†’ Iron Will last. Polearm is the easier default (more damage, +20 Speed); Spear attacks faster and ignores WDEF sometimes. Don't split SP between them.

Where's Hyper Body? Not in the Spearman kit. The Classic World skill data lists the Spearman's buff as Iron Will, and community guides note Hyper Body is a Dragon Knight (3rd job) skill. Third job isn't in Classic World yet, so a Spearman can't buff party HP for now.

Becoming a Spearman at level 30

Return to Dances with Balrog in Perion, start the 2nd job advancement, carry his letter to the Warrior Job Instructor in West Rocky Mountain IV, collect 30 Dark Marbles in the test map, bring back The Proof of a Hero and choose Spearman (2nd job quest guide). Finish your 1st job SP first; community guides say 2nd job SP can't go into 1st job skills. A common community 1st job endpoint is Power Strike 20, Slash Blast 19, Precise Strikes 15, Improved HP Recovery 3, Max HP Increase 3 and Iron Body 1 (Warrior 1โ€“30 guide).

Spearman skills

Max levels, prerequisites and effects below are from the Classic World skill data.

SP build: levels 30โ€“70

The build guide's order for a community Spear build. Polearm users swap in the polearm versions at the same levels.

60Rush +2, Iron Will +1Rush 20, Iron Will 1
61โ€“69Iron Will +27Iron Will 28
70Iron Will +2, 1 spare pointIron Will 30

Iron Will goes last because the build guide rates it the weakest part of the kit. Optional tweaks: Booster to 10 earlier if the short uptime bugs you, or Rush to 10 earlier (full 150 distance, 26 MP). Rush 1 costs 35 MP and has a 2-second cooldown, so don't spam it.

Grind loop: Booster and Iron Will both last 300 seconds, so recast them together. Rush to group, then Power Strike one or Slash Blast several.

Spear or polearm?

Here both sources agree on the core mechanic: Warrior attacks swing 60% of the time and stab 40%. Spears are strong on stabs, polearms on swings, which gives polearms the higher average multiplier: 2.7 vs 2.3. The build guide works it out as roughly 17.4% higher on the STR multiplier, not 17.4% more total damage.

What that means in the build guide's tests:

SpearPolearm
Level 30 Power StrikeForked Spear, ~28,400 dmg/minMithril Pole Arm, ~31,600 dmg/min (about 11% ahead)
Level 70 Power StrikeRedemption, 197,492 dmg/minThe Gold Dragon, ~211,200 dmg/min (about 6.9% ahead)
Mastery bonus20% chance to ignore WDEF+20 Movement Speed
Attack speedFaster at several levelsSlower
CraftingNo spear recipe in WeaponcraftingJanitor's Mop (skill 5), Axe Pole Arm (7), Crescent Polearm (8), The Nine Dragons (10)

The build guide calls polearm "the easier second-job default". The +20 Speed matters more than it sounds: by its count, boots plus five Lesser Speed scrolls get you about +12 from two gear slots, while Polearm Mastery gives +20 for free. Pick spear if you want faster swings (less time standing in a mob's face) or find a cheap scrolled spear on the Free Market.

Reach: the Spearman's real perk

Spears and polearms share the same hitboxes and have the longest melee reach of any weapon. The item data gives every spear and polearm 120 px swing reach and 130 px stab reach; the long two-handed swords like Scimitar come next at 100 px swing / 110 px stab, and one-handed swords and axes sit at 88/84. Community measurements land in the same place (about 122 px on average per basic attack). Longer reach means you hit mobs before they touch you, which cuts potion use on face-tank maps.

One quirk: the big swing hitboxes start a short distance in front of you, so a mob hugging your character can occasionally escape a swing. A community breakdown of the hitbox chart puts the overhead swing zone at 51 px out.

Final Attack and Iron Will

Final Attack adds a 350% hit on one mob 25% of the time and heals you for 10% of the damage, capped at 25% of your Max HP (or the mob's). The build guide's comparison at max:

You attack withMobs in frontFA on vs off
Power Strikeany11% more
Slash Blast211% more
Slash Blast31% more
Slash Blast44% less

Keep it on with Power Strike, off when Slash Blast is hitting four or more, and off when you already one-shot.

Iron Will is +50 WDEF and a 35% chance to ignore knockback, self-only. It does nothing against magic damage.

AP and accuracy

Every level 30โ€“70 spear and polearm in the build guide's list needs DEX equal to its level, and gear DEX counts toward it. Its sample from 135 STR / 27 DEX:

LevelsPer levelBase stats at end
31โ€“363 STR, 2 DEX153 STR / 39 DEX
37โ€“574 STR, 1 DEX237 STR / 60 DEX
58โ€“705 STR302 STR / 60 DEX

Gear supplies the last 10 DEX for Redemption. Accuracy targets at equal level (per the build guide): Jr. Wraith (34) 82 ACC, Wraith (48) 104, Croco (52) 101. The sample sits at 73 ACC at level 30.

Gear by level

The build guide's checkpoints (W.ATK in brackets, matching the item data):

LevelSpearPolearm
30Forked Spear (52)Mithril Pole Arm (55)
35Nakamaki (57)Axe Pole Arm (60)
40Zeco (59)Crescent Polearm (65)
50Serpent's Tongue (69)The Nine Dragons (75)
60Holy Spear (82)Skylar (85)
70Redemption (95)The Gold Dragon (95)

Of these, only the polearms Axe Pole Arm (Weaponcrafting 7), Crescent Polearm (8) and The Nine Dragons (10) can be crafted. No spear has a recipe, none of these is a quest reward, and drop sources and shop stock aren't in the game data, so the level 30 picks and every spear come from other players.

Gloves: Attack scrolls over Critical Rate, about 3.6% more expected damage on the level 70 build.

Where to train

A community training calculator picks these for a Spearman: Line 1 <Area 1> at 30โ€“34, the Ant Tunnels from 35 to 49, The Burnt Land from 50 to 59, Forest Up North VIII/IX in the 60s, then The Forest of Evil II or Line 2 <Area 3> at 70. Full tables in Spearman training spots. The Forest Up North VIII/IX picks are level 33 Curse Eye maps (17 and 20 spawns), chosen for safe, guaranteed kills rather than EXP, so treat them as a fallback once your accuracy can handle Wraiths (level 48) in the subway.

What's next: Dragon Knight

Spearman advances to Dragon Knight through Tylus in El Nath. Third job and El Nath aren't in Classic World yet; community sources say Nexon has no date and plans a 3rd job test server in early 2027. Comparing branches? See Fighter vs Page vs Spearman.

Frequently asked questions

Does Spearman get Hyper Body in MapleStory Classic World?
No. The Spearman's 2nd job buff is Iron Will. Community sources list Hyper Body as a 3rd job Dragon Knight skill, and 3rd job isn't in the game yet.
Spear or polearm for Spearman?
Polearm for more average damage and +20 Movement Speed; community guides call it the easier default. Spear for faster attacks and a 20% chance to ignore WDEF.
Why does polearm do more damage than spear?
Warrior attacks swing 60% of the time, and polearms get their strong roll on swings. That averages 2.7 against the spear's 2.3.
Can a Spearman use a shield?
No. Community sources list no shield option for Spearmen, so you don't get the shield Guard that one-handed Fighters and Pages can use.
Is Iron Will worth leveling early?
No. Community builds put it last because it's the weakest part of the build. It's self-only and doesn't help against magic.
Does Spearman Final Attack heal?
Yes. At max it heals 10% of the damage dealt, capped at 25% of your Max HP or the mob's Max HP.
