This is an opinion piece. It reflects our team's judgement, not official data. The assumptions behind each recommendation are listed in the article.

Fighter if you want damage and a party buff, Spearman if you want reach and sustain. Fighter hits harder and burns less MP for that damage in community level 70 models, and Rage makes you welcome in any party. Spearman trails on damage but reaches 120 to 130 px, the longest of any weapon, and its Final Attack heals you. Both are STR Warriors, so nothing you did in 1st job is wasted either way.

Quick answer: Solo on a potion budget → Fighter (best damage per MP of the Warriors). Hate getting touched, want the comfiest grind → Spearman, ideally with a polearm. Mostly partying → Fighter for Rage. The gap is real but not huge: about 15% single-target damage at level 70 in the community model.

Our assumptions

This is an opinion piece. It rests on these assumptions:

  • Classic World with no 3rd job. Crusader and Dragon Knight aren't in the game, so we compare the 2nd job kits only.
  • Damage numbers are a community level 70 benchmark, against a stationary target with 0 WDEF. They're not our own measurements, and real maps add misses, walking and defense.
  • You grind on Victoria Island and potion mesos matter to you.

Damage and MP (community benchmark, level 70)

BuildPower Strike damage/minDamage per MPSlash Blast on 6 mobs, damage/min
Fighter (2H axe)252,103253.1797,230
Spearman (spear)219,030203.3592,472

Fighter wins every column. The mobbing gap is the biggest, because Fighter's 3-target Final Attack and axe bleed roll on each Slash Blast target. Damage per MP matters in Classic, where potions cost real mesos.

Two things narrow the gap for Spearman. The same source has a polearm Spearman about 6.9% ahead of the spear build on Power Strike. And the model ignores enemy defense, where Spear Mastery's WDEF ignore claws some damage back.

Safety and feel

Spearman is the safer grind. You start hitting before most monsters reach you, Final Attack keeps topping your HP up, and Iron Will cuts the damage you take and keeps you from being knocked off ledges. Fighter face-tanks: short reach, and Rage costs you up to 40 WDEF while it's on. A one-handed Fighter with a shield is the way to make that safer, at some cost to damage.

Who should pick which

  • First character, mostly solo: Fighter. Best efficiency means fewer potion runs.
  • Party regular or KPQ grinder: Fighter. Rage buffs everyone near you.
  • Want the comfiest, safest grind: Spearman with a polearm.
  • Want Page's shield and mob control instead? See all three Warrior paths in Fighter vs Page vs Spearman.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fighter or Spearman better in MapleStory Classic World?
For damage, Fighter: it leads a community level 70 benchmark on single-target damage, mobbing and damage per MP. Spearman is the safer grind thanks to its long reach, self-healing Final Attack and Iron Will.
Does Spearman get Hyper Body in Classic World?
Not at 2nd job. The Spearman's 2nd job buff is Iron Will. Hyper Body is a 3rd job Dragon Knight skill, and 3rd job isn't in Classic World yet.
Should a Spearman use a spear or a polearm?
The community benchmark has a polearm Spearman about 6.9% ahead of a spear build on Power Strike, and max Polearm Mastery also adds 20 Movement Speed.
Can I switch from Fighter to Spearman later?
No. The 2nd job advancement is permanent, so pick the playstyle you'll enjoy.
