Iron Ore drops from Dark Stump (level 11) and, according to pre-launch drop data, Blue Snail (level 2), and the quest How to Enjoy Mushrooms Even More hands out 5. Garnet Ore drops from Dark Stump and Stirge, and also Snail, Fire Boar and Lorang according to pre-launch drop data. (All drops here are community-reported: the launch game data has no drop tables.) You don't get Garnet itself from monsters: you refine 1 Garnet Ore into 1 Garnet through Arcforge for 200 mesos.

Quick answer: Farm Dark Stumps early. They drop Iron Ore, Garnet Ore and Tree Branches, and they're on the Smithing and Arcforge starter quests anyway. For Fragment of Magic, kill Octopus. For Leather, Pigs and Ribbon Pigs. Ores turn into ingots (5 ore each) through Smithing; gem ores turn into gems (1 each) through Arcforge.

How to read the drop tables

Classic World drop data is still thin. The launch game data we use for monster levels, recipes and quest rewards has no drop tables, so every monster drop on this page is community-reported. Two kinds of community source exist:

  • Pre-launch drop tables come from pre-launch game data and include approximate rates. Other sites that show the same rates draw on that same data, so they're not an independent check.
  • Community "Dropped By" lists are player reports from Classic World itself.

In the tables, a monster in bold appears in both the pre-launch data and the player reports. The rest come from the pre-launch data only. Rates are pre-launch estimates. Classic World is new, so treat any rate as a rough guide, not a promise.

Where to get Iron Ore

SourceLevelNotes
Dark Stump11About 1 in 59 kills (pre-launch data). Also drops Garnet Ore and Tree Branch
Blue Snail2About 1 in 35 kills (pre-launch data)

What it's for: 5 Iron Ore + 100 mesos makes 1 Iron Ingot at Smithing level 1. Iron Ingots show up all over Smithing: helmets, gloves, boots and the Anvil for your house. NPCs pay 20 mesos per ore if you sell it.

Garnet Ore → Garnet: 1 ore + 200 mesos at Arcforge level 1. No monster drop of finished Garnet is reported, and shop inventories aren't in the game data, so refining (or buying from players) is the reliable way. The one quest source is Luke the Security Guy (level 19, from Luke at Henesys Dungeon Entrance), which pays one random gem out of eight (Diamond, Garnet, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Emerald, Opal, Sapphire, Topaz), so a Garnet is a 1-in-8 shot. Garnet goes into 35 recipes across all six professions in the game data, including the Hat Accuracy and Cape stat scrolls.

You also need 1 Garnet Ore for Chrishrama in Need of an Apprentice, the level 10 Arcforge starter quest in Sleepywood: defeat 30 Dark Stump, bring 1 Garnet Ore. One more reason Dark Stumps are worth your time.

All ores: what drops them

Quest rewards and drop monsters below come from pre-launch data (bold = also player-reported). The Smithing and Arcforge levels match across sources.

Metal ores become ingots in Smithing (5 ore per ingot).

All the gem ores are possible random rewards from Collecting 70 Cursed Dolls, except Diamond Ore (Collecting 100 Cursed Dolls) and Black Crystal Ore, which has no recorded source in the pre-launch data at all. Players have reported Diamond Ore from Dark Axe Stump and Fire Boar and Black Crystal Ore from Malady and Copper Drake, but those are single-source for now.

Farming tips

  • Dark Stump is the best all-rounder for new crafters: Iron Ore, Garnet Ore, Tree Branch and Arrows for Bows all show up in its drop table.
  • Octopus for Arcforge. It's the best listed Fragment of Magic source per kill and the only listed Aquamarine Ore source.
  • Pigs for Leatherworking and Arcforge. Leather, plus Gold and Topaz Ore.
  • Don't vendor ore you'll need. Sell-back is low (20 mesos for Iron Ore), and ore you'll use later is cheaper to keep than to buy back on the Free Market.

For recipes and how professions level up, see the crafting guide. For what crafted gear is worth making at each level, see the equipment guide by level.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get Iron Ore in MapleStory Classic World?
Kill Dark Stumps (level 11) or, per pre-launch drop data, Blue Snails (level 2), or do the quest How to Enjoy Mushrooms Even More, which gives 5. Players also report it from Stirges.
How do I get Garnet in Classic World?
Farm Garnet Ore from Dark Stumps or Stirges, then refine 1 ore into 1 Garnet at Arcforge level 1 for 200 mesos. No monster drops finished Garnet in the pre-launch data.
What drops Fragment of Magic?
Octopus (about 1 in 23 kills) and Green Mushroom (about 1 in 124), per the pre-launch drop table.
How many ores make an ingot?
Five. Bronze and Iron Ingots cost 5 ore and 100 mesos at Smithing level 1.
Where do I get Diamond Ore or Black Crystal Ore?
Pre-launch data records no monster drops for either. Diamond Ore is a random reward from Collecting 100 Cursed Dolls, and Luke the Security Guy can pay a finished Diamond (1 random gem out of 8); players have reported both ores from monsters, but that's unconfirmed.
Where do I get Leather for crafting?
Pigs and Ribbon Pigs early, then Wild Boars and Fire Boars. Ribbon Pig has the best listed rate, about 1 in 13.
