You become a Thief at level 10 by talking to the Dark Lord in the Thieves' Hideout, Kerning City. Level 10 to 30 on Lucky Seven with a claw, pour your AP into LUK, and only add DEX when your next claw asks for it. At 30 the same Dark Lord sends you off to become an Assassin or a Bandit.

Quick answer: Lucky Seven to 20 first, then Nimble Body and Keen Eyes to 15, Disorder 3, and the rest into Dark Sight. AP: LUK, plus just enough DEX for claws (15 / 20 / 25 / 30 at levels 15 / 20 / 25 / 30). Register Kerning City citizenship at level 12. Future Bandits can level the same way (the "Sindit" route).

Becoming a Thief at level 10

Do the Maple Island quests, sail to Victoria Island, and head to Kerning City. The Dark Lord sits in the Thieves' Hideout. He is also your 2nd job instructor at 30, so you'll be back.

Stat requirement: two community sources built on launch data both say Classic World's Thief advancement has no stat requirement. Older pre-launch pages (and guides built on them) still list a DEX 25 gate, the old-school rule. We go with the launch data. If the Dark Lord turns you away, tell us and we'll fix this page. Either way, don't dump AP into DEX "just in case" without checking first.

Starting stats: there is no dice roll in Classic. Every stat starts at 4 and you place 9 AP yourself, so a character starts with 25 total. Community builds use 12 LUK / 5 DEX / 4 STR / 4 INT as the Thief starting point. You get 5 AP per level.

Lucky Seven vs Double Stab

This is the big first-job choice, and the community answer is clear: Lucky Seven.

SkillMaxWhat it does at max (skill data)Weapon
Lucky Seven20Throws 2 stars, 140% each, 16 MPClaw + throwing stars
Double Stab20Stabs twice, 160% each, 16 MPDagger

Why Lucky Seven wins for leveling:

  • Range. You kill from a distance, take fewer hits and burn fewer pots. It also handles flying mobs like Stirges well.
  • It ignores mastery. Lucky Seven uses LUK and a 3.0 multiplier instead of the claw's normal 2.5, so you don't need a mastery skill for steady damage.
  • Both 2nd jobs can use it. Assassins keep it forever. Future Bandits can keep it until Savage Blow is ready (see the Bandit guide).

Double Stab is the "true dagger" Bandit route: melee from level 10, slower and riskier, but you never need to reset SP later.

A note on numbers: pre-launch skill pages list max Lucky Seven at 120%, which matches closed-test coverage. The Classic World launch skill data settles it at 140% (60% at Lv 1).

SP order: levels 10–30

You get 1 SP for the advancement at 10 and 3 SP per level after that, which is 61 first-job SP by level 30. Two common community builds aim for the same level 30 endpoint:

SkillMaxTarget at 30Why
Lucky Seven2020Your attack. Max it first.
Nimble Body1515+15 Accuracy and +15 Avoid at max. Lv 3 opens Keen Eyes.
Keen Eyes1515+200 throwing range at max.
Disorder203Lv 3 unlocks Dark Sight.
Dark Sight208Leftover SP. Travel utility.
Double Stab200Skipped on the claw route.

Order: Lucky Seven first. One build slips in Nimble Body 3 and one point of Keen Eyes around levels 11–12 for early range, then finishes Lucky Seven, then Keen Eyes, then Nimble Body. The other does Lucky Seven, then Nimble Body, then Keen Eyes. Either works; the endpoint is the same.

Spend every first-job SP by 30. One source says 2nd-job SP can't go into first-job skills. Another source's long-term plan does put late 2nd-job SP into first-job skills, so the sources disagree. Don't gamble on it: arrive at the Dark Lord with your first-job plan finished.

AP: LUK first, DEX only for claws

LUK is your damage stat. DEX only matters for equipment requirements and a bit of accuracy. Launch claws want DEX equal to their level:

LevelBase DEX targetUnlocks
1515Steel Titans
2020Steel Igor
2525Meba
3030Level 30 Guards claw (Adamantium / Steel Guards)

Everything else goes into LUK; STR and INT stay at 4. One community sample build ends level 30 at 30 base DEX and 132 base LUK. DEX on your other gear counts toward a claw's requirement, so you can sit lower if your armor has DEX. An item's own stats never count toward its own requirement.

Gear by level

Claws and stars from the Kerning City shops, armor from Don Hwang, and crafting once the shops run out.

LevelClawRequirementWhere
10Beginner's GarnierNo DEXStarter claw
15Steel Titans15 DEX / 35 LUKCutthroat Manny (community: 7,000 mesos) or Weaponcrafting 3
20Steel Igor20 DEX / 45 LUKCutthroat Manny (community) or Weaponcrafting 4 (upgrade of Bronze Igor)
25Meba (19 W.ATK)25 DEX / 55 LUKCutthroat Manny (community) or Weaponcrafting 5
30Guards claw30 DEX / 65 LUKWeaponcrafting 6 only

Claw W.ATK in the launch game files: Garnier 10, Steel Titans 13 (Mithril and Gold Titans 14), Bronze Igor 16, Steel Igor 17, Meba 19, Steel Guards 22, Mithril and Adamantium Guards 23. Older pre-launch pages still list higher values. Shop stock isn't in the game data; community shop lists say Meba is the last claw any shop sells, so from 30 you craft or buy from players. See the crafting guide.

Throwing stars add their W.ATK to the claw's for Lucky Seven:

StarW.ATKHow you get it early
Subi+15Dr. Faymus and other shops
Wolbi+17Max at Kerning City Civic Center, 1,000 mesos (citizenship-gated, community shop list); community sources say Fire Boars drop them (drop tables aren't in the game data)

Armor worth noting: the black and dark color variants are the ones with LUK. Black Ghetto Beanie (+1 LUK) at 10, Black Loosecap (+2 LUK) at 20, Dark Wolfskin gloves (+2 LUK), and at 30 the Dark Guise hat and Steel Sylvia gloves (+3 LUK each).

Overalls: the Sauna Robe from the Sleepywood quest chain (+1 to all four stats, 10 scroll slots, any class) is the only overall a Thief can wear before level 35, which makes it the LUK-scroll base early on. The robe needs level 30 and the quest that gives it, Returned Secret Book, is level 32 (both from the game data). Males get the Blue Sauna Robe and females the Red one. At 35, the Dark Avenger overall has +6 LUK and 10 slots. It's female-only in the game data (all four Avenger overalls are), so pick your character's gender with that in mind.

Citizenship at level 12: pick Kerning City

Citizenship opens at level 12. Kerning City is the Thief pick: its Civic Center has Max, who sells throwing stars, and the town's rewards lean toward LUK. Wolbi stars reportedly unlock at the Helpful Stranger grade, the third grade (reachable from level 22). Start early so your contribution builds while you level. Full details: citizenship guide.

Accuracy: why you miss Zombie Mushrooms

Thief accuracy, per community launch data:

Accuracy = (1.2 × DEX + 2 × Level + 0.6 × LUK) ÷ 4 + 15, plus direct Accuracy from gear and Nimble Body.

Level is worth more than a point of DEX, and max Nimble Body adds 15 on top. Mobs above your level need more accuracy. Community examples: a level 20 Thief needs 44 ACC to always hit a level 20 Stirge, but 54 for a level 24 Zombie Mushroom. At level 25 the same Zombie Mushroom only needs 47. If you're missing, it's often faster to out-level the mob than to add DEX.

A reminder: a miss still costs the MP and the stars.

Transfer Area is 4 maps from Kerning City through the subway, so star recharges and pots are close. More options: where to train 10–30.

Common mistakes

  • Stacking DEX for the advancement without checking. Launch data says there's no gate.
  • Standing too close. Up close your claw punches instead of throwing, for almost no damage. Step back or jump-attack.
  • Buying expensive stars before a claw upgrade. Claw, MP pots and a few Subi stacks first.
  • Leaving first-job SP unspent at 30.
  • Training far from town when a slightly worse map is next to a pot shop and star recharge.

2nd job at level 30: Assassin or Bandit

Go back to the Dark Lord and start The Thief's Next Journey. He sends you with a letter to the Thief Job Instructor at Construction Site North of Kerning City. Collect 30 Dark Marbles in the test map, trade them for The Proof of a Hero, and bring it back to the Dark Lord (2nd job quest guide). The choice is permanent.

There's no 3rd job in Classic World at launch, so 2nd job is your endgame for now.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need 25 DEX to become a Thief in MapleStory Classic?
Community sources built on launch data say there's no stat requirement for the Thief advancement in Classic World. Older pre-launch pages still list DEX 25, so if the Dark Lord refuses you, that's why.
Should I use Lucky Seven or Double Stab from level 10?
Lucky Seven. It's ranged, doesn't need mastery, and works for both Assassins and Bandits. Double Stab is only for players committed to a melee dagger Bandit from day one.
How much DEX does a Thief need?
Only enough for your next claw: launch claws need DEX equal to their level (15, 20, 25, 30). Everything else goes into LUK.
Where is the Thief job advancement in Classic World?
The Dark Lord in the Thieves' Hideout in Kerning City, at level 10. He also starts your 2nd job advancement at level 30.
Which citizenship should a Thief pick?
Kerning City. Max at the Civic Center sells throwing stars, and Wolbis reportedly unlock at the Helpful Stranger grade.
Can a future Bandit level with Lucky Seven?
Yes. That's the Sindit route: level on Lucky Seven, become a Bandit at 30, and switch to a dagger once Savage Blow is ready, usually around level 40.
