How to Make Mesos as a Magician in MapleStory Classic World
Magicians don't buy ammo, but they pay for every spell in MP, and MP is the expensive half of the potion shop. Make mesos as a Magician by cutting your MP bill first (Lemons, not Blue Potions; careful Magic Guard), taking the quests that pay in mesos and MP potions, and crafting your wands instead of buying them from Flora the Fairy.
Quick answer: Drink Lemons (1 MP per meso), never Blue Potions for value. Keep Magic Guard low unless deaths cost you more than pots. Craft a Hardwood Wand at Woodcrafting Lv. 3: it costs about half the shop price to make and breaks even if you vendor it. Save Shumi's Lv. 35 jump quests for 10,000 mesos and 30 Mana Elixirs. Never buy mesos.
This is the Magician-specific angle. The general route by level is how to make mesos; class basics are on the Magician class page.
Assumptions: you solo, you're between Lv. 10 and 40, and prices are NPC prices. "Sells for" is the NPC sell price from the game data; shop prices (what Flora, grocers or Ben charge) aren't in the game data and are community-reported. Player prices aren't reliably published yet.
Your real cost is MP
A community Magician guide sums it up: MP potions cost twice as much per point as HP potions. In town shops the best HP items restore 2 HP per meso, while the best MP items manage 1 MP per meso:
| MP item | Shop price (community) | Restores (game data) | Per meso |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orange | 50 | 50 MP | 1 MP |
| Lemon | 150 | 150 MP | 1 MP |
| Blue Potion | 220 | 200 MP | about 0.91 MP |
Lemon ties Orange on value and restores three times as much per use, so it's the default. Every missed spell still costs its full MP, so accuracy is a money issue for you, not just an EXP one. One point of Improved MP Recovery makes items restore 10% more MP (a Lemon gives back 15 more), which a community guide recommends taking early.
Magic Guard costs mesos
Magic Guard moves damage from HP to MP, and MP is the pricier pool. Here's what 100 incoming damage costs to refill at basic shop rates (2 HP or 1 MP per meso), using the skill data's absorb share (36% at Lv. 3, 80% at Lv. 15, the max):
| Magic Guard | Refill cost per 100 damage |
|---|---|
| Off | 50 mesos |
| Lv. 3 | 68 mesos |
| Lv. 15 | 90 mesos |
That doesn't mean skip it: a death costs more than any potion. It means a Magician who keeps getting touched is burning money, so pick maps where you kill before you're hit.
Clerics get a discount nobody else does. A community measurement puts Heal Lv. 2 at about 110 HP for 12 MP (roughly 12 mesos of Lemons), against about 55 mesos of HP potions for the same 110 HP.
Quests that pay in MP
Potion rewards are mesos you don't spend. These are worth routing for:
| Quest | Lv | Mesos | Also gives |
|---|---|---|---|
| I Need Help on My Homework! | 10 | 351 | 10 Blue Potions |
| Cutthroat Manny's Request | 22 | 716 | Silver Wind Shoes for Magicians (wearable at Lv. 25). From Nella; needs Chris's Request, 50 Evil Eye kills and 30 Evil Eye Tails |
| The Faded Ink | 28 | 892 | 10 Mana Elixirs |
| Arwen and the Glass Shoe | 29 | 921 | Repeatable, Piece of Ice or Fairy Wing |
| Maya's Second Collection | 30 | 965 | 30 Blue Potions |
| Shumi's Lost Sack of Cash | 35 | 10,000 | 30 Mana Elixirs. Third of Shumi's three jump quests (B1 and B2 first, 1,111 mesos each) |
Arwen's quest doubles as a crafting supply line: its Piece of Ice is the key input for the Arcforge Ice Wand.
Craft your wand instead of buying it
Flora the Fairy in Ellinia sells the Magician weapons (her prices below are community-reported), and crafting undercuts her even after you count the materials. "Full cost" below is the fee plus every input at what it costs to make (Processed Wood 150 = 10 Tree Branch + 100 fee; Iron Ingot 200 and Mithril Ingot 400 = 5 ore + fee; Screw 40 each), with farmed drops at their NPC price:
| Wand | Flora's price | Craft fee | Full cost to craft | Profession |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden Wand | 3,000 | 1,500 | about 2,100 | Woodcrafting Lv. 2 |
| Hardwood Wand | 5,000 | 1,500 | about 2,490 | Woodcrafting Lv. 3 |
| Metal Wand | 10,500 | 3,500 | about 5,350 | Arcforge Lv. 4 |
| Ice Wand | 13,500 | 4,500 | about 7,500 (with the Piece of Ice at its 400 NPC price) | Arcforge Lv. 5 |
Hardwood Wand is 5 Processed Wood plus 30 Orange Mushroom Caps, all farmable inside Woodcrafting. It sells to NPCs for 2,500, so at full cost it breaks even (+10): free crafting EXP, not an income. Metal Wand and Ice Wand need ingots from Smithing and Screws from Weaponcrafting (and Ice Wand is Magician-only, Lv. 25), so they only pay off if you run those professions too or buy the parts. Details in the Woodcrafting guide and Arcforge guide. Tailoring covers most Magician gloves, hats and shoes: see the Tailoring guide.
Vendor what you won't use
Wooden Staff drops from Stumps in community drop data and sells to NPCs for 1,500. Keep one weapon, sell the duplicates.
Big-ticket items to plan for
- Scrolls. A community guide lists Ben in Kerning City selling the Lesser Overall INT scroll for 40,000 mesos. El Moth in The Tree That Grew III near Ellinia sells the Lesser wand and staff magic-attack scrolls; one community price list says 60,000, another 25,000, so check in game (see the scrolling guide). Only scroll a weapon you'll keep long enough to earn that back.
- Buff potions. Magic Potion (+10 magic attack for 10 minutes) costs 500 mesos and, per community shop lists, is sold only by Len the Fairy in Ellinia. Use it when it saves a cast per kill.
- Pure Water (800 MP, 1,120 mesos in Sleepywood) is convenience, not value: it works out to under 1 MP per meso.
What not to do
- Don't vendor crafting materials, gems or scrolls on reflex. Player prices often run far above NPC prices.
- Don't chase "best meso map" claims. Meso drops haven't been measured on live servers.
- Don't buy mesos. Trading unlocks 24 hours after a character on your account hits Lv. 15.
