Woodcrafting Guide for MapleStory Classic World: Vicious, Arrows, Bows and Every Recipe
Woodcrafting is taught by Vicious in Henesys. It makes arrows 500 at a time, bows, crossbows, wands and staves, plus house furniture. The launch game data has 49 recipes, 42 craftable at launch, and it has more profit-positive recipes at NPC prices than any other profession: the Bronze and Iron arrows, plus Hardwood Wand, which breaks even.
Quick answer: Bring Vicious 20 Tree Branches (and 30 Stump kills) at Lv. 10. Level through the cheap wooden weapons at Lv. 2, then Hardwood Wand at Lv. 3, which costs you nothing net at NPC prices. Bowmen: craft your own Bronze and Iron arrows instead of hunting for a shop that sells them.
This page goes deep on Woodcrafting alone. For how all six professions compare, the shared EXP tables and the weekly quest rules, see the crafting professions guide. For where the raw drops come from, see where to get crafting materials.
Who teaches Woodcrafting and how to unlock it
Nexon's Grand Launch notes name Vicious as the Woodcrafting master, and the launch game data places the NPC in Henesys. Talk to Vicious from character level 10. The profession runs on three quests from the same NPC:
| Quest | Name | Lv | What it asks for | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Vicious in Need of an Apprentice | 10 | Defeat Stump Γ 30; Tree Branch Γ 20 | 188 EXP, 351 mesos |
| Weekly helper | Vicious in Need of Help | 15 | Woodcrafting Lv. 2 or higher; Defeat Axe Stump Γ 25; Processed Wood Γ 1 | 669 EXP, 497 mesos, Woodcrafting Kit |
| Mastery | A Carpenter in My Own Right! | 25 | Woodcrafting Lv. 5 or higher; Defeat Dark Axe Stump Γ 30; The Red Relaxer Γ 1 | 3,060 EXP, 804 mesos, Two-Handed Weapon Crafting Catalyst |
The weekly helper quest pays a Woodcrafting Kit, which community sources describe as +10% crafting EXP for 15 minutes. You can't count on getting it every week, though: the quest data puts all six profession helper quests in one weekly rotation, and each week the game offers one of the six, so this one only comes up when the game rolls it.
Vicious stands in Henesys Market, per the game data's NPC map. One Nexon patch note matters here: the October 15 maintenance fixed Woodcrafting items that shouldn't give crafting EXP giving EXP with a Woodcrafting Kit, so older leveling tricks built on that no longer work.
How many Woodcrafting recipes are there?
The launch game files hold 49 Woodcrafting recipes: 16 consumables, 23 equipment, 4 materials, 6 other. 42 of them sit at crafting Lv. 1 to 8; the other 7 are Lv. 9 and 10 recipes, and community data reports those aren't craftable yet because crafting stops at Lv. 8 at launch. Older community lists show a different count, so trust the in-game window if they disagree.
Every Woodcrafting recipe you can craft at launch (Lv. 1 to 8)
Fee is what the NPC charges per craft. "Sells for" is the NPC sell price of the result from the game data, so you can see what you get back if you vendor it. Equipment recipes give 20 crafting EXP per recipe level.
Leveling Woodcrafting
Two rules decide your pace. First, crafting Lv. 1 opens at character Lv. 10 and every level after that needs character level = 5 Γ crafting level (Lv. 4 needs 20, Lv. 8 needs 40). Second, once your bar hits 100% at the cap, extra EXP is thrown away until you level your character and do one more craft. Don't burn materials at 100%.
The table below picks, for each crafting level, the recipe that costs the least per EXP point (recipes that upgrade an existing item are left out). "Net" is our math from the game data at full cost: the NPC sell price of the result, minus the fee, minus every crafted input at what it really cost to make (its own fee plus the raw drops at NPC sell price). An ingot, a screw or a sheet of Processed Leather isn't worth just its tiny NPC sell price, because you paid a fee and raw materials for it. Full-cost values used: Bronze or Iron Ingot 200, Mithril Ingot 400, Screw 40 each, Processed Wood 150, Processed Leather 150, Processed Cloth 150, Spool of Thread 11 each, Garnet or Aquamarine 240, Emerald or Topaz 480.
| Crafting Lv | Char. Lv | Cheapest recipe per EXP | EXP | Net per craft (full cost) | EXP per meso lost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 | Processed Wood | 3 | -140 | 0.02 |
| 2 | 10 | Wooden Sword | 40 | -600 | 0.07 |
| 3 | 15 | Hardwood Wand | 60 | +10 | profit |
| 4 | 20 | Bronze Arrows for Bows | 12 | +140 | profit |
| 5 | 25 | Plunger | 100 | -2,100 | 0.05 |
| 6 | 30 | Ryden | 120 | -3,480 | 0.03 |
| 7 | 35 | Iron Arrows for Bows | 21 | +640 | profit |
| 8 | 40 | Heckler | 160 | -4,060 | 0.04 |
Two caveats. The net figures count farmed raw drops at their NPC value and assume you make every intermediate yourself, which means other professions (Smithing for ingots, Weaponcrafting for Screws, Leatherworking for Processed Leather, Tailoring for cloth and thread, Woodcrafting for Processed Wood, Arcforge for gems); if you buy inputs from players, your real cost is different. And player prices for crafted gear and rare materials often run far above NPC prices, so "sells for" is a floor, not what the item is worth.
Notable Woodcrafting recipes
- The arrows make money; Hardwood Wand breaks even. On our math from the game data at full cost (Processed Wood 150 = 10 Tree Branch at 5 + 100 fee; Bronze or Iron Ingot 200 = 5 ore at 20 + 100 fee; Stiff Feather 10): Bronze Arrows for Bows or Crossbows (Lv. 4) cost 360 per 500 and sell for 500, +140; Iron Arrows for Bows or Crossbows (Lv. 7) cost 360 per 500 and sell for 1,000, +640. Hardwood Wand (Lv. 3) costs 2,490 (1,500 fee, 5 Processed Wood, 30 Orange Mushroom Caps) and sells for 2,500, so it's +10: free EXP rather than income. Community calculators that show +710 and +880 count Processed Wood and ingots at their 10- and 100-meso NPC price, which leaves out the fee and raw materials you paid. The arrows need Smithing for the ingots.
- Arrows, 500 at a time. One Processed Wood and one Stiff Feather make 500 plain arrows with no fee. Town grocers sell plain arrows for 1 meso each, so crafting them is a saving for Bowmen rather than a business. The better tiers are where the value is: community shop lists show Bronze arrows only in Raymond's citizen shop in Henesys Town Hall (Helpful Stranger grade and up) and no shop at all for Iron arrows; shop inventories aren't in the game files, so treat both as unverified.
- Bows and crossbows for less than Karl charges. Karl in Henesys sells Hunter's Bow and Balanche for 13,500 each. At full cost (fee, Processed Wood, Screws and the rest) they cost about 6,000 and 5,880 to craft. Battle Bow is 16,500 in the shop and about 8,510 to craft, including its 2 Iron Ingots and 2 Topaz. The Screws mean you need Weaponcrafting, or a supplier.
- Wands and staves too. Wooden Wand costs 3,000 at Flora the Fairy and about 2,100 to craft at full cost (1,500 fee plus 4 Processed Wood). Old Wooden Staff is the Lv. 4 Magician staff.
- The Red Relaxer (Lv. 5) is the mastery-quest hand-in. Its recipe needs Processed Cloth and dyes as well as wood.
Materials Woodcrafting eats
Tree Branch from Stumps for Processed Wood at Lv. 1, then Firewood (Lv. 2), Seedling (Lv. 3) and Wooden Board (Lv. 5) as alternative wood sources. Stiff Feather for arrows, Screws for every bow and crossbow, and ingots or gems for the better weapons. See where to get crafting materials.
