Scrolls in Classic World don't use the old 10% / 60% / 100% names. Every scroll comes in four tiers: Lesser (100%), Intermediate (60%), Greater (10%) and Chaos (10%). On most stats that's +1, +2, +3 and +4, but weapon scrolls jump higher at the top: weapon attack goes +1, +2, +4, +5 (see the table below). Only Chaos can destroy your item, and it does so on half of its failures. On average, Intermediate gives the most stat per slot and Greater is a trap.

Quick answer: Use Intermediate when slots matter, Lesser when mesos matter, and skip Greater. Keep Chaos away from anything you can't replace. Shops only sell Lessers (community-reported). Intermediate and Greater scrolls come from quests, the GM-event Magic Box and reported drops. Scroll your weapon and gloves for attack first.

The four scroll tiers

TierSuccess rateGrants (standard stat)Can destroy the item?
Lesser100%+1No
Intermediate60%+2No
Greater10%+3No
Chaos10%+4Yes, on half of failures

Not every stat moves in steps of 1. The base step depends on the scroll family:

LadderLesserIntermediateGreaterChaosFamilies
Standard+1+2+3+4STR/DEX/INT/LUK, accuracy, avoid, speed, jump, crit, glove attack
Weapon attack (weapon scrolls)+1+2+4+5Every weapon type except wand/staff
Weapon magic attack (wand/staff)+2+4+8+10Wand and staff scrolls
Magic attack and defense+2+4+6+8Gloves magic attack, all DEF scrolls (from Intermediate up, DEF scrolls also add +2 / +4 / +6 of the other defense)
HP and MP+10+15+20+25Hat, topwear and bottomwear HP or MP

The game has 208 scrolls, but they're just 52 families (one equipment type plus one stat) times those four tiers. All families share one icon per tier, so read the tooltip, not the picture.

If you played the original game: the launch data has no 30% or 70% scrolls (all 208 scrolls are 100%, 60% or 10%) and no item named White Scroll or Clean Slate. Classic's Chaos is a fixed bonus (+4 on most stats, +5 weapon attack) at 10% with destruction risk, not the old random-range Chaos Scroll.

Which tier is worth using

Multiply the grant by the success rate to get the stat you can expect per scroll:

TierExpected gain per scroll (standard)Expected gain per scroll (HP/MP)
Lesser+1.00+10.00
Intermediate+1.20+9.00
Greater+0.30+2.00
Chaos+0.40+2.50

On weapon attack scrolls the top two tiers pay a little more: Greater works out to +0.40 per scroll and Chaos to +0.50, still well below Lesser (+1.00) and Intermediate (+1.20).

  • Intermediate wins on most scrolls. It's the only tier that beats the guaranteed Lesser on standard families.
  • Greater is the worst choice. Between 20% and 40% of a Lesser's expected gain, depending on the family.
  • HP and MP scrolls flip the answer. Lesser beats Intermediate there, because +15 isn't double +10.

On a 7-slot weapon, seven Lessers give exactly +7 attack. Seven Intermediates average +8.4, but only about 1 in 36 weapons hits all seven, and one community simulation finds that more than 1 in 4 ends up worse than the Lesser route.

Upgrade slots

Each item has a fixed number of slots, set when the item is made. There's no rerolling for a "high slot" version. The launch item data counts 301 items with 5 slots, 801 with 7 and 95 with 10, and the slot count follows the item type:

SlotsItem types
10Overalls
7Weapons, hats, tops, bottoms, shields (a handful of weapons, tops, bottoms and shoes have no slots at all)
5Shoes, gloves, earrings, capes

Main-stat scrolls (STR, DEX, INT, LUK) only exist for capes, earrings and overalls. Tops and bottoms can't take them, which is why a 10-slot overall like the level 30 Sauna Robe is a big deal for damage (any class can wear it, but it's gender-locked: Blue Sauna Robe is male-only, Red Sauna Robe female-only).

Does a failed scroll use up the slot? Nobody has confirmed it from the game data. Community sources that read the client data say it isn't recorded there. Community scroll simulators assume a failure eats the slot, as it did in the original game. Test on a cheap item before you scroll anything you care about.

Chaos scrolls: the honest math

A Chaos scroll succeeds 1 time in 10. Of the 9 failures, half destroy the item. That's a 45% chance of losing the item on every attempt, and it compounds:

Chaos scrolls usedChance the item survives
155.0%
316.6%
55.0%
71.5%

Fill a 7-slot weapon with Chaos and it survives 1.5% of the time. Use Chaos only on gear you're happy to lose. The game data has a Chaos version of every scroll family, weapons included, but at launch the only quest that pays one is Monstrous Tree Stumpy (level 34, a guaranteed Gloves Crit. Rate Scroll: Chaos). The other known route is a Scroll Crafting Catalyst on an Arcforge craft (see below).

Where to buy scrolls

Every shop scroll is a Lesser.

Citizen scroll shops (community-reported; shop inventories aren't in the game data, but prices and grades agree across community sources):

Scroll (Lesser)Flint, Henesys Town HallBen, Kerning City Civic CenterPriceGrade needed
Topwear DEF / Bottomwear DEFYesYes20,000Town Resident
Earring Crit. DamageYes—40,000Helpful Stranger
Earring Evasion—Yes40,000Helpful Stranger
Overall Armor STR / DEXYes—40,000Distinguished Citizen
Overall Armor INT / LUK—Yes40,000Distinguished Citizen
Gloves AttackYesYes40,000Guardian of the Village
Gloves Magic AttackYesYes40,000Guardian of the Village

Gloves Magic Attack appears in two community lists but not in the pre-launch shop tables.

Field scroll sellers (no citizenship needed; community-reported):

El Moth and Tulcus prices differ by source. One source lists El Moth at 30,000 for one-handed sword, axe, blunt and dagger scrolls and 60,000 for everything else, wands and staves included. Another lists 25,000 and 50,000 and puts wands and staves in the cheaper group. For Tulcus, the first shows 20,000 or 40,000 depending on the scroll; the second says 15,000 across the board. Pre-launch shop data has no stock recorded for either NPC yet. Check before you budget.

Intermediate and Greater scrolls

No NPC is reported to sell them. In the game data they come from quests. Examples:

Nexon's Grand Launch notes add one more route: a Scroll of Secrets from a GM event, taken to Chun Ji at the Kerning City Construction Site, gives a Magic Box that Mr. Pickall in Kerning City opens into one random item, and the list includes Intermediate and Greater armor, shoe, earring, glove, shield and cape scrolls. Players also report a few monster drops; treat those as unconfirmed.

Scroll crafting (Arcforge)

You can write your own Lesser scrolls with the Arcforge profession, taught by Chrishrama in Sleepywood. Crafting opens at character level 10, per Nexon.

  • Recipe shape: every scroll recipe takes 1 Processed Parchment, 10 Fragment of Magic and 3 gems, plus a meso fee. The Hat Accuracy Scroll, for example, uses 3 Garnet and a 10,000 meso fee. Fees are 10,000 for most scrolls and 20,000 for the earring stat, Gloves Crit. Rate and cape stat scrolls.
  • Level gates: your craft level is capped by character level. Craft level 4 needs character level 20 and craft level 6 needs 30.
  • Launch cap: reportedly, crafting stops at craft level 8 at launch. The cape stat scrolls sit at Arcforge 10, so they're not craftable yet.
  • Scroll Crafting Catalyst: its item description says that, used while crafting, it has a chance to produce an Intermediate, Greater or Chaos scroll of the same category. The rate isn't in the game data. The catalyst comes from the level 25 quest An Arcforger in My Own Right! and, reportedly, from Zombie Mushmom.

Is it worth it? At full cost (fee + 1 Processed Parchment at 230 + 10 Fragment of Magic at 10 + 3 refined gems), a Hat Accuracy Lesser costs 11,050 mesos to make and an Earring stat Lesser 25,430. One community analysis priced every craft against Free Market prices on October 15 and found buying cheaper for almost every scroll; the only profitable crafts were cape scrolls that sit at Arcforge 10, above the reported launch cap. Fragment of Magic is reported to drop from Octopus and Green Mushroom; gems are refined from ores. See where to get crafting materials and the crafting guide.

What to scroll first

  • Your weapon, once it's a keeper. Community guides suggest scrolling a level 30 weapon or a crafted one from 35 on, not your level 15 shop sword.
  • Gloves for attack, not crit. Community level 30 tests for Thief, Bowman and Magician all favor Gloves Attack (or Magic Attack for mages) over Gloves Crit. Rate.
  • An overall for main stat. Ten slots of STR, DEX, INT or LUK. Warriors and Magicians get class overalls early; every class can get a Sauna Robe at 30.
  • Don't pour slots into armor you'll replace in five levels.

Get your scrolls in game: shops, quests, drops, crafting or the Free Market. Don't buy scrolls, mesos or scrolled items for real money.

Frequently asked questions

What are the scroll success rates in MapleStory Classic World?
Lesser 100%, Intermediate 60%, Greater 10%, Chaos 10%. Only Chaos can destroy the item, on half of its failures.
Are there 10% and 60% scrolls in Classic?
Yes, under new names. Greater is the 10% scroll and Intermediate the 60%. There are no 30% or 70% scrolls in the launch data.
Can Chaos scrolls boom my weapon?
Yes. Each Chaos attempt has a 45% chance to destroy the item, so a 7-slot item filled with Chaos survives only 1.5% of the time.
Where do I buy weapon attack scrolls?
El Moth in The Tree That Grew III, near Ellinia, sells every weapon-attack Lesser. Prices differ between sources (25,000 to 60,000), so check in game.
Which scroll tier is the best?
Intermediate gives the most per slot (+1.2 on average). Lesser is cheaper per stat and guaranteed. Greater is the worst value.
How do I get Intermediate or Greater scrolls?
Not from shops. They come from quests, the GM-event Magic Box, Arcforge crafts with a Scroll Crafting Catalyst and reported drops.
Does a failed scroll use a slot in Classic World?
Unconfirmed. The game data doesn't say. Guides assume it does, so plan as if it does.
