What Is MapleStory Classic World? How It Differs From Old GMS and Modern Maple

If you remember sitting in Henesys waiting for a party, saving up for your first Ilbi, or riding the boat with strangers, Classic World was made for you. But here's the thing a lot of "classic" guides get wrong: Classic World is not old GMS restored from a backup. It's a new take on early MapleStory, built by people who made the original.

Who's behind it

Nexon's head of Global MapleStory, Hanbyeol Oh (Inkwell to most of us), started the project together with Nemi, who was deeply involved in the original game design. Dr. Lim, who led MapleStory's art direction since before Big Bang, is on the team too, along with other early-Maple veterans who came back for it.

Their guiding question, in Inkwell's words, was what they would have done back then "knowing everything we know now".

Not a 1:1 remake

Inkwell has said plainly that the goal is not to recreate the MapleStory of 20 years ago one-to-one. In practice, that means three kinds of content:

  • Kept: the core loop you remember: Maple Island, Victoria Island, 1st and 2nd job, the classic bosses, the Kerning City party quest, the Free Market.
  • Changed: details that differ from old GMS. Example: every class takes 1st job at level 10 in Classic World, Magicians included (old GMS let mages advance at 8).
  • Brand new: systems that never existed in old GMS, like Citizenship, Housing, Crafting, the Beauty Album, the Lie Detector Test and the upcoming Forgotten Hollow area.

Updates also won't follow the old GMS order. Nexon says 3rd job and new regions "may be introduced sequentially", some content will be adapted, and some will be completely original.

Our rule because of all this: we never assume something works the way it did in old GMS or on a private server. If we haven't seen it in Classic World or in Nexon's notes, we say so.

Classic World vs modern MapleStory

They share an account and NX, but they're very different games.

Classic WorldModern MapleStory
PaceSlow, social, "the beauty of taking it slow"Fast progression, constant growth

Bans are shared, though. A ban in one is a ban in both.

The slow-Maple philosophy

Inkwell talks about wanting players to step away and come back "without feeling hopelessly behind", and about town chat, waiting for the boat and wandering around being meaningful parts of the game. That's the vibe: less rushing, more grinding with friends.

On monetization, he says they want to avoid selling Cash Shop items that directly affect stats or growth, and focus on cosmetics and convenience. Every Founder's Package item was cosmetic.
