Shade is Kerning City's ghost story. It's a level 48 undead boss with 47,000 HP, weak to Holy and resistant to Poison, and it waits alone in the Cabin of the Forsaken, behind a hidden passage in Niora Hospital. Most players meet it through the citizenship quest An Old Grudge at level 47. Its base timer is an hour, and Nexon made field boss respawns more random at launch.

Quick answer: Lv 48 · 47,000 HP · 488 EXP · undead, weak to Holy, resists Poison. Kerning City → Niora Hospital → The Murky Swamp I → The Murky Swamp II → Cabin of the Forsaken. 1-hour base timer, randomized since launch.

Shade stats

These come from the Classic World game data (see the Shade database page).

Community data puts the Holy weakness at 25% extra damage. Shade's weapon DEF (30) is three times its magic DEF (10), so magic hits it harder as a result.

Where Shade spawns and how to get there

Shade spawns in the Cabin of the Forsaken (Hidden Street), one at a time. The cabin hangs off The Murky Swamp II, a map Nexon added in the Kerning City area at Grand Launch. Your return map is Kerning City.

Route from Kerning City (4 portals, per the game's map data):

  1. Kerning City → hidden portal on the left side → Niora Hospital
  2. → hidden portal in the middle, near the bottom → The Murky Swamp I
  3. → portal at the far left → The Murky Swamp II
  4. → portal on the left side, near the bottom → Cabin of the Forsaken

The cabin has a single spawn point. It's just you, Shade and whoever else is waiting.

Respawn: about an hour, now randomized

Nexon's Grand Launch maintenance notice says field boss respawn times were "adjusted to be more randomized." The hour below is a guide, not a promise.

  • Base timer: 1 hour. The game data stores a 3,600-second spawn timer for Shade.
  • Respawns reportedly land on a roughly 7.5-second cycle, so a fresh spawn can slip a few seconds past the hour.
  • No live kill logs for Shade have been published yet. Community reports have other field bosses running closer to 90 minutes, so don't be surprised if Shade does too.

The Shade quest: An Old Grudge

Rewards11,400 EXP, 1,477 mesos, 10 Elixirs, 180 Kerning City contribution

That's straight from the game data, where the quest is one step of the A Grudge That Won't Rest storyline and unlocks the next step when you finish. 11,400 EXP is about 2% of a level at 47 (555,680 EXP needed), against 488 EXP (under 0.1%) for a normal kill, so the quest is the main reason to visit. See the citizenship guide for how grades work.

What the fight looks like

The debuffs and aggression are in the game data. The Wraith summon comes from a single community source, so treat it as unconfirmed:

  • Debuffs (game data): Shade casts Seal, Darkness and Curse. Timings: Seal lasts 3 seconds (once every 120), Darkness 6 seconds (every 60), Curse 120 seconds (every 35). The usual reading is that Seal stops you using skills, Darkness lowers your accuracy and Curse cuts the EXP you earn; the data names the debuffs but doesn't describe them.
  • Wraith adds (unconfirmed): reportedly, once Shade drops below 50% HP (23,500 left), it summons 3 Wraiths every 30 seconds, capped at 3. A Wraith is level 48 with 2,350 HP in the game data.
  • Aggressive: it attacks on sight.

No source publishes a recommended level or party size. The quest sets a floor of 47. A community accuracy table says you need 114 ACC at level 48, 136 at level 43, and 158 at level 38 to never miss.

Strategy by class

No measured kill times exist yet, so this is based on the stat sheet.

  • Clerics: this is your boss. Holy Arrow is described as very effective against the undead, and two sources say Heal damages undead monsters like Shade.
  • Fire/Poison Wizards: skip Poison Breath, since Shade resists Poison. Use Fire Arrow or your neutral spells.
  • Ice/Lightning Wizards: no resistance gets in your way, and Shade's low magic DEF helps all magicians.
  • Warriors, Bowmen and Thieves: Shade's weapon DEF is high, so expect slower damage. Bring a Cleric if you can. Kill the Wraiths fast in the second half, or they'll pile on.
  • Everyone: if the reported Curse effect is right, the Wraith kills during the debuff won't be worth much EXP. Focus Shade.

Shade drops

No source publishes Classic World drop rates for Shade, and most sources don't list Shade drops yet. One community player-voted list has early sightings of Elixirs, Blue and White Potions, several crafting catalysts and a Cape STR Scroll: Intermediate. Treat those as unconfirmed. The 10 Elixirs from An Old Grudge are a quest reward, not a boss drop.

Frequently asked questions

What level is Shade in MapleStory Classic?
Level 48, with 47,000 HP and 488 EXP per kill, per the Classic World game data.
Where is Shade in Classic World?
In the Cabin of the Forsaken. From Kerning City, take the hidden portal to Niora Hospital, the hidden passage to The Murky Swamp I, then The Murky Swamp II, then the cabin.
How often does Shade respawn?
About an hour after it dies, but Nexon made field boss respawns more randomized at Grand Launch, so expect variation.
Can I solo Shade at level 47?
You can try, and you need level 47 for the quest anyway, but no source publishes a solo threshold. Shade has 47,000 HP, Wraith adds below half HP and a Seal debuff. Clerics have the best odds because of the Holy weakness.
What quest needs Shade?
An Old Grudge, a level 47 Kerning City citizenship quest from Jane Doe at Niora Hospital. You need Kerning City Citizenship grade 8+ and A Name She Couldn't Say done first. You defeat 1 Shade and report to Roxy.
What is Shade weak to?
Holy. It also resists Poison and is undead, so Heal damages it.
