Is MapleStory Classic World Pay to Win? What the Cash Shop Actually Sells
At launch, no. Nothing in MapleStory Classic World's Cash Shop adds stats to your character, the Founder's Packages were purely cosmetic, and Nexon's stated plan is cosmetics plus "appropriate convenience items". What you can buy are convenience items like AP/SP resets, Safety Charms, pet auto-potion and store permits. Whether those count as pay to win depends on where you draw the line, so here's the list.
Quick answer: no stat items for sale at Grand Launch. Founder's items gave no stats or bonuses. The Cash Shop is cosmetics plus convenience. Nexon has said it wants to avoid selling items that directly affect stats or growth. That's a stated direction, not a guarantee.
What Nexon has said
In an October 2 interview, Inkwell (Hanbyeol Oh, head of Global MapleStory) addressed P2W directly. His points, in short:
- In Classic World, the time you invest is a core part of progression, and it should feel earned.
- So they want to avoid selling Cash Shop items that directly affect character stats or growth.
- The basic approach is cosmetics and appropriate convenience items.
- Monetization shouldn't make players feel their invested time was devalued.
He also said P2W means different things to different people and didn't try to define it. Keep that in mind: this is a statement of direction from the head of the game, not a rule written into anything.
Founder's Packages: cosmetic
Nexon's sale posts say all Founder's Package items are "purely cosmetic" and grant no stats or bonuses. The only gameplay advantage they ever gave was Founder's Access, a two-week head start from October 6 to Grand Launch on October 21. Sales closed October 14.
What the Cash Shop sells at launch
From Nexon's Founder's Access and Grand Launch Cash Shop posts:
| Type | Examples | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetics | Mystery Fashion Crate (random outfit piece), hair and face coupons, pets and pet hats | Crate: 3,500 NX |
| Stat/skill respec | AP Reset Scroll, SP Reset Scroll | 7,000 NX each |
| Death protection | Safety Charm (no EXP loss on one death) | 800 NX |
| Pet convenience | Auto HP Potion Skill, Auto MP Potion Skill, Auto Move Skill | 2,500 / 2,500 / 3,000 NX |
| Trading | Regular Store Permit (12 items, 90 days) | 1,500 NX |
| Space | Storage and inventory 5-slot coupons | 5,000 NX each |
| Chat | Megaphones (level 15+) | From 350 NX |
None of these raise your attack, stats, HP, or EXP rate.
The grey areas, honestly
If you're strict about P2W, these are the items worth watching:
- Safety Charms cut the cost of dying. Nexon's launch event gives some out free (3 each on Day 2 and Day 10 of The Journey Begins). How much a death actually costs: death and EXP loss.
- Pet auto-potion and auto-loot make long grinding sessions easier. They don't make you kill faster.
- Store Permits let you sell in the Free Market without standing at your keyboard. They're a trading tool, and the launch event hands out a few temporary ones too. See the Free Market guide.
- Tradable crate items. Unwanted Mystery Fashion Crate items can be traded to other players before you equip them, so cash cosmetics do end up in the player economy.
- AP Reset. It lets a paying player fix a bad build. It doesn't add AP.
What's not there at launch: EXP coupons, drop coupons, stat potions sold for cash, or Cash Shop equipment with stats.
The bottom line
On Nexon's own terms (no direct stat or growth items), Classic World isn't pay to win at Grand Launch. If convenience items bother you, the list above is everything you'd be competing against. We'll update this page whenever the Cash Shop changes.
