MapleStory Classic World Controls and Settings: Classic vs Modern (WASD), Controller Setup, Best Settings
MapleStory Classic World lets you pick Classic Style (the old arrow-key layout) or Modern Style with WASD movement, rebind every key, and play on an Xbox or PlayStation controller once you switch controller support on in Game Options. None of that existed in the original game, so it's worth a few minutes before you leave Maple Island.
Quick answer: pick Classic or Modern in the key settings before you build habits. Controller users: turn on Enable Controller Support in Game Options first; it's off by default. Then expand your quick slots and set the HP/MP warning.
Classic vs Modern key layouts
Nexon's Grand Launch notes give you a choice of Classic Style or Modern Style as the default key bindings, with Modern supporting WASD movement. Community guides also list a third layout, Compact.
| Layout | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Classic | The default. Traditional layout; quick slots reportedly sit on the Insert / Delete / Home / End / Page Up / Page Down cluster. |
| Modern | WASD movement (Nexon). Quick slots reportedly move to QWER and 1 to 4. |
| Compact | Described as a laptop layout that doesn't need the Insert/Home cluster. |
Which to pick: if your hands still remember the original game, Classic. If you play modern PC games, Modern. On a laptop without a full key cluster, try Compact. Every key can be rebound afterwards either way.
Presets: community guides say the key screen has three saved preset pages. You can reportedly also bind a Switch Preset key, handy for a training layout and a KPQ or bossing layout.
Quick slots
The quick slot bar reportedly has twelve slots, and an Enable 3 Rows checkbox changes how they're stacked. Another guide describes the same thing from what you see: the compact panel shows eight cells until you tick that box. If your bar looks short, tick it.
Put pots on the keys you can hit without looking. You'll press them more than any skill.
Controller setup
Nexon officially supports DualSense, DualShock and Xbox controllers, over USB or Bluetooth (Classic World FAQ). Other controllers may not work.
- Connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth.
- Open Game Options and tick Enable Controller Support. It's off by default (Nexon).
- Open the controller tab and adjust Stick Sensitivity.
- Check the layout: community guides describe the left stick for movement, the right stick for the cursor, quick slot banks on the triggers, and slots on the D-pad.
- Set your controller quick slots separately. Controller mode reportedly replaces the keyboard-style row with grouped slots.
Community guides list three D-pad modes (Auto-Switch, Always Standard, Always Cross-Style) and recommend keeping a keyboard nearby for typing and setup.
Settings worth changing on day one
These come from a community walkthrough of the test client's menus. Labels could shift between the test and live client, so if something's missing, look one menu over.
- HP Warning and MP Warning. Pick the percentage where the bar starts flashing. Set it before a long grind.
- Enemy Info. Choose what shows over monsters: nothing, name, HP, or name and HP. Name and HP is the most useful while you learn new mobs.
- Screenshots. Pick a format and folder. There's a Burst Screenshot and an Auto Screenshot option that can capture every level-up.
- UI and graphics. Resolution, windowed mode, VSync, UI size and UI Fade (windows go transparent in combat).
- Combat clutter. Lower other players' skill opacity on crowded maps, change damage number size, and put pets behind characters.
- Social filters. Block whispers, party invites, trade requests or friend requests separately if you're getting spammed.

Platform and language
Classic World runs on Windows and macOS (Nexon launch notes and FAQ). The launch notes list English with Spanish and Korean in beta, and the FAQ says you change language at the login screen or in Game Options, then relaunch.
