How to Use the Free Market in MapleStory Classic World: Rooms, Store Permits and Selling
The Free Market (FM) is reached through a portal in Henesys (in Henesys Market) or Perion. Both lead to the Free Market Entrance, which branches into numbered trading rooms. Nexon added rooms 12 to 20 at Grand Launch, so there are 20 rooms now. To sell, you open a shop with a Store Permit from the Cash Shop: a Regular Store Permit lists 12 items, a Pink or Fall permit lists 18.
Before your first sale: new accounts can't trade until 24 hours after a character on the account reaches level 15. Megaphones bought since Grand Launch need level 15 too. That's all covered in our trading guide; this page is about actually using the FM.
Getting to the Free Market
- From Henesys: walk into Henesys Market; the FM portal is there.
- From Perion: take the Free Market portal in town.
The game data's own quest text confirms it: "the Free Market can be accessed through Henesys or Perion." Community records add that leaving the FM sends you back to the town you came from.
Rooms 1 to 20
The Free Market Entrance is a lobby with portals to each room. During Founder's Access there were 11 rooms; Grand Launch added Free Market Rooms 12–20 (Nexon), so you now have 20 rooms. Community records describe the rooms as monster-free, with no NPCs, so the whole floor is for stalls.
Old-school habit that still holds: the low-numbered rooms (especially FM 1) fill first and get the most foot traffic, while the higher rooms are quieter. Nothing in the game enforces this, it's just where people look first.
Lewis and the "Welcome to the Free Market!" quests
At level 13, Lewis in the Free Market Entrance starts a four-step delivery chain: carry his letter to Chief Stan in Henesys, bring the reply back, then do the same with Dances with Balrog in Perion. Each step pays 424 EXP and 306 mesos, and both reply steps add 10 Blue Potions. The four steps total 1,696 EXP, about 40% of level 13 (4,200 EXP), plus 1,224 mesos: worth it for anyone passing through.
| Quest | From → To | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome to the Free Market! | Lewis → Chief Stan | 424 EXP, 306 mesos |
| Chief Stan's Reply | Chief Stan → Lewis | 424 EXP, 306 mesos, 10 Blue Potions |
| Asking Perion for Help | Lewis → Dances with Balrog | 424 EXP, 306 mesos |
| Dances with Balrog's Reply | Dances with Balrog → Lewis | 424 EXP, 306 mesos, 10 Blue Potions |
Store Permits
| Permit | Items listed | Price | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Store Permit | up to 12 | 1,500 NX | 90 days | Free on The Journey Begins check-in days 4 and 12 (untradable, 7 days) |
| Pink Store Permit | up to 18 | 3,000 NX | 90 days | pink tree store |
| Fall Store Permit | up to 18 | 3,000 NX | 90 days | orange tree store, sold until November 18 |
| Special Store Permit | - | part of Monthly Essentials | 30 days | Nexon doesn't list its item count |
Rules from Nexon's item text:
- Permits work in fields or in the Free Market.
- If a monster attacks or kills you, the store closes. Open your shop in the FM, not on a training map.
There are no Hired Merchants in the launch Cash Shop listings, and community trackers confirm they aren't in the game yet. Your shop is open only while your character sits at it.
Setting up shop, step by step
- Get a Store Permit (Cash Shop or the launch event).
- Head to a room with space. Don't block someone else's stall.
- Use the permit, name your shop, and register items with a price and quantity. Since the October 15 patch, the listing window shows how many items you've registered.
- Stay logged in. Close the shop to collect unsold items; Nexon fixed a bug where they didn't return to your inventory right away.
One community tracker says the store takes a 3% fee on sales. Nexon hasn't published a fee, so treat it as unconfirmed.
Pricing and buying safely
- Check the quantity before you buy. A stack of 1,000 might be priced per item. Read the total mesos in the purchase window.
- Price check first. Walk a few rooms and compare. Community price trackers exist, but in-game stalls are the real market.
- Advertise with megaphones. A Megaphone shouts to your channel, a Super Megaphone to the whole world, and an Item Megaphone shows the item you're selling to the world. Megaphones bought from the Cash Shop since Grand Launch need level 15 (ones bought before keep their level 10 requirement), and megaphones only support English text.
- Never buy mesos. Classic World shares bans with regular MapleStory. One RMT ban and both are gone.
