Accuracy and Hit Rate in MapleStory Classic World: Formula, Level Gap and How Much ACC You Need
In MapleStory Classic World your accuracy comes from DEX (INT for Magicians), LUK and your level, and every level a monster has over you cuts your effective accuracy. Spells go through the same hit check, so Magicians can miss too. If you're missing a lot, the fix is usually a lower-level map, not more DEX.
Quick answer: Accuracy is checked against the monster's avoid after it's scaled down by the level gap. At equal level you need surprisingly little ACC; five or more levels under a mob, misses pile up fast. Use the class formulas below or a calculator, and train on monsters at or below your level.
What changed from old GMS
Returning players get caught by this in their first week. Three independent community sources describe the same new system:
- Your level is part of your accuracy, alongside DEX and LUK.
- Each class converts stats into accuracy at a different rate. Warriors (and Beginners) get the most ACC per point, Magicians the least.
- Magic can miss. Spells use the same hit check as weapon attacks.
One source disagrees: an older community reference page still shows a single DEX/LUK formula for every class and says magic never misses. That page is marked as pre-launch data. The three sources above all describe the version we explain here.
Accuracy formula by class
Two community sources give the same per-class formulas. "Stat" is DEX for everyone except Magicians, who use INT. Gear and skill accuracy add on top.
| Class | Base accuracy |
|---|---|
| Beginner | (1.2 × DEX + 2 × Level + 0.6 × LUK) / 2.5 + 5 |
| Warrior | (1.2 × DEX + 2 × Level + 0.6 × LUK) / 2.5 + 10 |
| Bowman | (1.2 × DEX + 2 × Level + 0.6 × LUK) / 4.8 + 20 |
| Thief | (1.2 × DEX + 2 × Level + 0.6 × LUK) / 4 + 15 |
| Magician | (1.2 × INT + 2 × Level + 0.6 × LUK) / 5.1 + 20 |
Each result rounds down. A community worked example: a level 30 Warrior with 30 DEX and 4 LUK has 49 base accuracy.
Avoid (your dodge stat) uses the same formula in both sources: floor(LUK / 3) + floor(DEX / 6) + 5.
The hit check and the level gap
This is the part that matters. Two community sources write the same check:
- Scale your accuracy by the level gap. If the monster is L levels above you, your accuracy becomes ACC × 100 / (10 × L + 255). At equal level or above the monster, L is 0.
- Add some randomness. The roll's spread is 0.15 + 0.20 / (1 + e^(D / 12)), where D is your scaled accuracy minus the monster's avoid. The closer the two are, the wider the spread.
- Hit if your scaled accuracy times a random number between (1 − spread) and (1 + spread) reaches the monster's avoid.
In plain terms: each level a monster has over you raises the accuracy you need by about 4% (10 / 255). That doesn't sound like much until you stack it with the randomness. We ran the formulas above with monster levels and avoid from our game data, for a level 30 Warrior with 40 DEX and 4 LUK (54 base ACC), assuming the random multiplier is spread evenly:
| Monster | Level / avoid | Hit rate, 54 ACC | With maxed Precise Strikes (+20 ACC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curse Eye | 33 / 22 | about 19% | about 83% |
| Lupin | 37 / 27 | 0% | about 15% |
| Mushmom | 40 / 29 | 0% | 0% |
A community write-up quotes 30% and 92% for the Curse Eye case; it doesn't state the Warrior's LUK or exact ACC, so treat both sets as illustrations of the same point: three levels of gap already hurts, ten levels makes you useless without gear and buffs.
If the monster is at or below your level, there's no gap penalty at all. The gap only counts when the monster is higher.
How much ACC do you need?
It depends on the monster's avoid and the level gap, so there's no single number. A community Thief guide lists real examples for a 100% hit rate:
| Monster | Mob level | Mob avoid | Your level | ACC for 100% hits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bubbling | 15 | 9 | 15 | 31 |
| Stirge | 20 | 13 | 20 | 44 |
| Zombie Mushroom | 24 | 14 | 20 | 54 |
| Zombie Mushroom | 24 | 14 | 25 | 47 |
Look at the last two rows. Same monster, but being four levels under it costs you 7 more ACC for a clean 100%. Out-leveling it by one fixes it.
Practical rules:
- Train at or below the monster's level when you can. It's the cheapest accuracy there is.
- Warriors and Thieves: don't strip DEX to zero without checking. Your weapon's DEX requirement and your accuracy both read total DEX, base plus gear.
- Magicians: your accuracy uses INT, so a normal INT build covers most of it, but you will see misses on higher-level mobs now.
- Use a calculator. Community accuracy calculators run these formulas against full monster databases.
How accuracy fits with damage is in the damage formula guide. Stat planning is in starting stats and AP.
